The Benefits of Bringing Your Hotel Laundry In-House

In today's competitive hospitality market, guests are looking for hotels to provide more than just a place to sleep. Hotels are adding services, investing in on-premise dining and entertainment, and generally offering more for guests in-house.

But that movement isn't limited to front-facing services. Many hotels are taking back control of behind-the-scenes operations that were previously outsourced, like laundry. Some hotels consider laundry an easy area to outsource, but there are real benefits to keeping the operation in-house, as we'll discuss below.

Quality Control

A common challenge with outsourced hotel laundry is a lack of quality control. When outsourcing, you don't have the ability to make changes to the wash process if you notice excessive wear and tear on your linens. Certainly you can always change vendors if you're unhappy with the quality of clean from one of them, but searching for a new vendor can be an involved process.

With an in-house laundry operation you have control over the care of your linens from start to finish, and you can make changes if you see problems. That could range from the chemicals used to the specific wash processes to the temperature of the water.

With outsourced laundry, hotels often have to operate on the vendor's schedule, rather than their own. This can be particularly difficult during busy times, or if your hotel is in a more rural location where deliveries take longer. With in-house laundry you don't have to wait on someone else to provide your guests with fresh linens.

The theme here is that in-house laundry operations give hotels more control over all aspects of cleaning and therefore help them better serve guests. But in-house laundry isn't just good for the guests—it's good for your bottom line.

Cost Savings

After outsourcing laundry for many years—dealing with high processing costs, inflexible turnaround times, and the harsh chemicals used in the mass cleaning process—the DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma decided to take back control, and now the hotel saves almost $70,000 per year with in-house laundry.
